Informed sources said that Maj. Gen. of 21 Mika Brigade, Brigadier General Guhdul Hunaish al-Awlaqi, escaped an assassination attempt Friday morning in the Al-‘Obailat area of Shabwah Governorate (southeastern Yemen) while inspecting a brigade military site.
A source close to the commander said they were surprised during al- Awlaqi inspection of a brigade military site by gunfire from a group of militants affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council.
The source added that a limited clash took place between al- Awlaqi escorts and the militants of the Southern Transitional Council, following a failed targeting attempt, and that a tribal mediation intervened to end the clashes.
The province of Shabwah is witnessing security tension and armed clashes that spread to several neighbourhoods and government facilities in the centre of Ataq City, after the deployment of the pro-UAE forces in the centre of the city without the knowledge of the government security and military authorities.
